Try a browser-based MMO. They don't have much in the way of graphics, but there's no download, no fee, and usually a casual atmosphere. A good one is the Urban Dead, which features a war between humans and zombies. But there are many.

try Gunz or Rakion...only thing I can think of..Gaia-online isn't fighting though.

I don't know of a game that is a MMORPGs that doest not require a download in the glorious age of highly graphical games. However, if you take a step back to the predecessors of the latest MMORPGs you may fing MUDs to your liking. This are free, chat based games, that require only and you can read and type. I don't remember any of the games myself, but you could do an internet search to find a MUD that fits the genre you are looking for. Finding older games that may be free are either not MMORPGs, or they will cost $$, and are typical fantasy based. Sounds like your best bet is to check out a book from the library and hang out in a chat room.
